Curriculum

Curro Bankenveld is in the process of being registered with the Mpumalanga Education Department and therefore offers the National Curriculum Statement as prescribed by the National Department of Education.  We offer the same learning areas, but write the Matric examination of the IEB.

Our Education Model accommodates all five phases:

Fun Activities - Primary School

Reception Phase

  • 4 - 5 year old (Gr. R) as well as 5 - 6 year old learners (Gr. 0) are enrolled.
  • A curriculum with a variety of interesting contents that is followed throughout the year
  • Term reports that focus on the three learning areas of Literacy, Numeracy and Life Orientation
  • Regular communication with parents regarding progress of learner - including one-on-one interviews
  • A computer in each class
  • A weekly KDA programme, which puts the focus on the general physical development of the learner
  • Learning outside the class - interesting and educational outings pertaining to specific themes.
  • Participation in the Eisteddfod.
  • Free eye assessments for all new learners by a trained person
  • Social functions for the learners, parents and grandparents during the year
  • A stimulating learning environment inside and outside the classroom where the learners can develop their full potential. 

Foundation Phase

  • Participation in all sports offered at the school
  • Reading programme followed intensively
  • Eisteddfod participation
  • Participation in the annual countrywide Junior Olympiad
  • Continuous assessment in all learning areas
  • Cross evaluation in all grades to ensure a high standard of education
  • Enrichment activities for learners who excel in Literacy and / or Numeracy
  • Parent meetings four times a year to discuss progress of learners
  • A formal progress report to show parents the assessment standards achieved during the term
  • An end-of-year function at which EVERY learner receives recognition for the work done during the academic year
  • IT classes once a week that are integrated with the curriculum
  • Outings once a term to various educational places that integrate with themes done in class 

Intermediate Phase

  • Music appreciation classes once a week
  • IT classes and access to the INTERNET for research
  • Technology room for the learners to have practical experience according to the learning outcomes
  • Formal assessments in the form of exam twice a year
  • Parent / educator discussions three times a year - on occasion learners accompany their parents to discuss their progress and        to draw up a joint development plan
  • Participation in various types of sport
  • Supplementing of the curriculum by using outside consultants and specialist in certain learning areas
  • Entrepreneurs' day to promote learners' marketing skills
  • An annual camp for the grade 6's to create an awareness of our environment - life skills such as leadership and group work are also        focused on
  • Outings once a term in conjunction with the curriculum work covered in class
  • A learning programme with content that is integrated with the curriculum
  • Enrichment work
  • A reading and spelling programme as priority in the Intermediate Phase
  • A general knowledge quiz on a regular basis
  • Certificates awarded to all learners at the end-of-year function to certify that they have met the requirements for their specific grade
